Ideal Weight Calculator Guide
The Ideal Weight Calculator estimates a healthy body weight from your height and gender using several widely-used formulas. Use it to get a general target range, not a precise prescription.
These are estimations. Ideal body weight is also influenced by bone density, muscle mass, body frame, and overall composition, which these formulas do not capture.
How to Use
- Unit System: Choose Metric (centimetres for height, kilograms for results) or Imperial (feet and inches for height, pounds for results).
- Height: Enter your height. This is the primary input for every estimate.
- Gender: Select Male or Female. Most formulas use different coefficients per gender.
- Body Frame: Choose Small, Medium, or Large to adjust the estimate for your bone structure (see below).
Understanding the Results
- Ideal weight range (headline): the spread between the lowest and highest of the four formulas. They were developed by different researchers and disagree slightly, so a range is more honest than a single number.
- Healthy BMI range: the wider weight band corresponding to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9, a generally healthy range for most adults.
- Per-formula table: each formula's individual estimate.
Which Number Should I Use?
There is no single "correct" ideal weight. Treat the ideal weight range as the answer rather than fixating on any one formula. For everyday purposes, the healthy BMI range is the most practical guide, since it reflects a span of weights that are healthy for your height. If a clinician has asked you for an "ideal body weight" (for example, to size a medication dose), they usually mean the Devine value, which is the clinical standard.
Formulas Used
With over = (height in inches) − 60 (inches over 5 feet):
Devine (1974)
Originally created for medication dosing and now the most widely referenced formula in clinical practice. A known limitation: it overestimates weight at tall heights and underestimates at short ones, so read the result with caution at the extremes.

Robinson (1983)
A refinement of Devine derived from population data; it usually sits in the middle of the four.
- Men:
52 + 1.9 × overkg - Women:
49 + 1.7 × overkg
Miller (1983)
Another 1983 refinement of Devine; it typically gives the lowest estimate of the four.
- Men:
56.2 + 1.41 × overkg - Women:
53.1 + 1.36 × overkg
Hamwi (1964)
The oldest of the four, designed as a quick bedside estimate; still common in nutrition practice.

Healthy BMI Range
Weights corresponding to BMI 18.5–24.9 for your height: BMI × (height in metres)².
Body Frame Adjustment
The four formulas use only height and sex, so they don't account for bone structure. A long-standing convention (paired with the Hamwi method) adjusts the estimate for body frame:
- Small frame: −10%
- Medium frame: no change
- Large frame: +10%
Frame size is commonly estimated from wrist circumference relative to height. A quick proxy: wrap your thumb and middle finger around the opposite wrist. If they overlap, you likely have a small frame; if they just touch, medium; if they don't touch, large. The frame adjustment is applied to the formula-based estimates only; the healthy BMI range is unaffected.
Note: these formulas are based on biological sex and use only height. They don't account for age or body composition, and aren't validated below 5 feet (152 cm). A separate measure, adjusted body weight, is sometimes used for clinical drug dosing and requires your actual weight; this calculator does not compute it. Treat these results as a starting point, not a diagnosis.
