BTEC UCAS Points

A BTEC National Extended Diploma is worth up to 168 UCAS Tariff points at D*D*D*, the same as three A*s at A level. Smaller BTECs scale down from there: a Diploma tops out at 112, an Extended Certificate at 56, and a Certificate at 28.

about three A levels

A levels alongside it

Plenty of BTEC students take an A level or two as well, and the Tariff simply adds them on.

On points alone. It is not an offer: a course asking for these grades wants them in named subjects, and many courses restate their offer in BTEC grades instead.

Every size at a glance

The Tariff scores a qualification on its size and its grade, so the size of your BTEC sets the ceiling and the grade decides where in that range you land.

The full ladders

Each size has its own grade string, and the same letters mean different things at different sizes: D on an Extended Certificate is one A level’s worth, while DDD on an Extended Diploma is three. Where a size is a whole number of A levels, the last column gives the A level grades worth the same points across that many A levels. It compares points only, which is not the same as meeting a grade offer.

Three things students get wrong

Your subject does not change the points. A BTEC in Sport and a BTEC in Applied Science of the same size and grade are worth exactly the same. The Tariff prices size and grade, nothing else. What your subject does change is which courses will take you, which is a different question and often the more important one.

BTEC letters are not A level letters. D stands for Distinction, not a D grade. A D on an Extended Certificate is worth 48 points, the same as an A at A level, and an M (Merit) is worth 32, the same as a C.

The new AAQ qualifications score the same as the old ones. A Pearson BTEC Level 3 AAQ Extended Certificate at 360 guided learning hours carries D* = 56, D = 48, M = 32, P = 16, identical to the RQF Extended Certificate. The reform changed the qualification, not its Tariff value.

Where a BTEC total gets you

BTEC applicants are the group the Tariff genuinely serves. A points total is the natural currency when your qualification does not map onto “AAB”, and courses that quote points are exactly the ones most likely to be reading it. Courses that quote grades instead will usually restate their offer in BTEC grades, so look for the DDM or DMM line on the course page rather than converting yourself.

Some courses ask for a specific subject alongside the BTEC, most often a science or Maths A level, and that requirement is not something a higher BTEC grade can satisfy.

Work out your full total

This page covers BTEC Nationals. If you hold a mix of qualifications, or a subject-specific BTEC that is not one of the five sizes above, the UCAS points calculator searches all 9,807 qualifications on the Tariff and shows how a grade-based university would read your profile.
